Dow Jones suffers record one-day points loss, plunges 1,175 points

The Dow Jones industrial average closed Monday nearly 1,200 points below opening, as two days of steep losses for U.S. stocks brought an end to a period of record-setting calm in the market, which saw the stock exchange hit 26,000 points last month for the first time.
